The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) branch of the Senior Staff Association of the Public Universities in Ghana (SSA-UoG)) has joined an indefinite strike declared by the mother association and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff (FUSSAG) effective January 17, 2024.
The unions are striking over the government’s inability to address issues related to pensions and the cancellation of overtime allowance.
According to the SSA-UoG UENR branch chairman, Clifford Asomah Kyere, the government’s failure to release the Tier-2 Pension contributions from March to December 2023 is bringing unbearable hardship to union members.
‘‘It’s very painful that you’ll work for over 20 to 30 years and the government through SSNIT will deduct from your monthly salary and after retirement the lump sum in your account will be too little. The government owes us so much money. We have some of our retirees who are still requesting for their pension benefits to be paid,’’ he said.
The association says the government should prioritise and deal with the recalculations of accrued interest on Tier-2 pensions for 2010 – 2016, as agreed upon in the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed on July 25, 2022, and pay all outstanding arrears to retirees without further delay.
Mr. Asomah Kyere has described as ‘‘a cheat’’ the variation of their condition of service agreement by the government and the elimination of the overtime allowance.
He said the union is determined to keep pushing the government until their issues are properly addressed.
